Old Man Is Fired from His Life-Long Job — A Month Later, He Becomes the Owner of the Company

Edward was a dedicated and hardworking employee. He had been with the company since the very beginning. Even though he was well past retirement age, he continued to show up every day, on time, doing his job with the same commitment as ever. Everyone respected him for it.
But one day, everything changed.
He received a formal letter:
“This notification is to inform you that your position is being terminated. Due to corporate restructuring, there will be significant workforce reductions.”
Tears welled in Edward’s eyes. Around him, coworkers wore the same stunned expression — people who, like him, had given their lives to the company.
But what hurt Edward most wasn’t just the job loss — it was the betrayal. After decades of loyalty, this was how they thanked him?
Later that day, Edward saw the real reason for the layoffs.
Rick, the company’s founder and Edward’s longtime friend, had stepped down and passed control to his only grandson, Dan. The young man began his leadership by purging the staff — believing older workers like Edward were obsolete.
Dan thought the company needed “sharp, modern minds” to meet monthly targets — not aging employees he saw as dead weight. So he dismissed Edward along with many others.
Edward packed up his belongings and left the place he had called home for most of his life. He returned to his empty house. His only son had moved abroad, and his beloved wife had died of cancer years ago. There was no one to talk to.
He wondered if he should take up gardening or maybe start a YouTube channel like younger generations do. But deep down, none of that felt right. What he really wanted was to go back to his desk, typing reports and building charts — the routine he loved.
Then, exactly one month later, something unexpected happened.
While eating breakfast, Edward received a call from an unknown number.
— “Am I speaking to Mr. Edward Morales?” asked a stern voice.
— “Good morning, Mr. Morales. My name is Andrew Hoffman. I’m Mr. Rick Benson’s attorney. I’m calling to inform you that, following Mr. Benson’s passing, you have been named the new owner of his IT firm. I’d like you to come to my office to finalize the paperwork.”
— “If I’m not mistaken,” the lawyer added, “you and Mr. Benson were childhood best friends. He always spoke of you with admiration. He often mentioned how you stepped away from the company’s top management to work in a regular position — even though you co-founded the business with him.”
— “Well, before his death, he made one final request: he wanted his oldest friend to have the company back. I’ll send you the details by email,” he concluded before hanging up.
Shocked and speechless, Edward quickly got ready and made his way to the lawyer’s office.
There, he met Dan.
Dan admitted the truth.
— “My grandfather gave me the company so I could learn to be a real businessman. But I made terrible decisions. I fired people who were vital to the company’s success,” he said, visibly ashamed.
Edward took a deep breath and smiled gently.
— “Alright then, Dan… buckle up. This is going to be a bumpy ride, kid. You better be ready.”
Once he took over, Edward worked tirelessly — not only to rebuild the company but also to guide Dan along the way. He taught him how hard it is to build something meaningful, how important people are, and what real leadership looks like.
Years later, when Edward felt confident that Dan had truly grown, he handed him the title of CEO.
Dan promised he wouldn’t disappoint anyone — and he hasn’t. The company is thriving under his leadership, and somewhere out there, Rick is surely smiling — proud of both his grandson… and his best friend.
