My Colleague Came to My Date with Her 3 Kids & Ruined It — When I Confronted Her, She Boldly Said: “You Should Thank Me”

The third date with Susan was supposed to be the charm. We had met on Tinder, and things had been going well. That night, I chose a cozy Italian restaurant tucked away from the usual chaos.
Susan arrived in a navy-blue dress that fit her beautifully. Her hair flowed over her shoulders, and when she smiled, I thought, “This might be something real.”
But just as we were settling in, I heard a familiar voice.
“Oh, hey, Rob! Fancy seeing you here!”
It was Linda — my coworker from accounting — standing at the entrance with her three kids clinging to her: loud, energetic, and visibly messy.
Susan glanced at me, puzzled.
“Friend of yours?”
“Coworker,” I corrected, forcing a smile as Linda’s children climbed into the seats at our table.
Linda has always been a mystery. A single mother of three — aged 2, 8, and 12 — the result of two failed relationships. She’s beautiful and intimidating.
But that night, as she sat beside me with her kids, her presence wasn’t just strong. It was overwhelming.
“Linda, what are you doing here?” I asked in a low voice, glancing at Susan, whose surprise was quickly turning to irritation.
“You promised to watch the kids tonight, and here you are… on a date with her?” she said, nodding toward Susan.
“I mean, we’re a family,” she added, gesturing toward her children, now happily munching on breadsticks. “They were so excited to see you tonight!”
“Linda, I never said—”
She shrugged, a smug smile playing on her lips.
“I didn’t mean to ruin your date, Susan. But you should know the kind of guy you’re seeing. He’s been stringing me — and the kids — along for months.”
Susan grabbed her purse and stormed out without another word.
I turned to Linda, seething.
“What are you doing? You just ruined my date!”
She leaned back calmly as her toddler chewed another breadstick.
“You should thank me.”
“For what?” I asked, stunned.
She pulled out her phone, scrolled confidently, then held it up.
“For saving you.”
The screen showed a blurry photo — but the face was unmistakable.
“That’s… Susan?” I asked.
“It’s a mugshot,” Linda replied.
“My brother’s a cop. Last night, I stopped by the station and saw her face on the wanted board. She’s been conning men — gets close, gains their trust, then scams them out of thousands.”
“I didn’t put it together until I saw the photo you posted before your date. I called my brother. She’s probably being arrested right now.”
I stood speechless. My anger faded into a mix of shock, disbelief… and maybe even gratitude.
Looking at Linda, I couldn’t decide what I felt. If what she said was true, maybe she’d just saved me from something terrible. But the way she did it? I wasn’t sure I could forgive it.
Linda smirked.
“You know, Rob… you really should be thanking me.”
I shook my head, half amused, half furious.
“You’re unbelievable.”
As I looked at her — tired, radiant, and surrounded by children who hung on her every word — something inside me shifted. She wasn’t just the bold woman who crashed my evening. She was more. She saved me tonight… and maybe opened my eyes to something I had refused to see.
“Linda,” I said, my voice steadier than expected, “can I buy you dinner? All of you.”
Her oldest grinned.
“I vote pizza!”
“All right, Rob,” Linda said. “But only if you’re buying dessert too.”
“Deal,” I smiled.
Two years later, Linda and I are still together. I adopted her kids, and every day they remind me what it means to love — and be loved.
