THE DISCOVERY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

My name is Luara, I’m twenty years old and in my final year of design school. People always say I seem more mature than my age — maybe because I was raised only by my mother, a strong, hardworking and extremely protective woman. My father died when I was very young, and since then my mother never got involved with anyone else. She dedicated her entire life to raising me.
It was during a volunteer project in Ouro Preto that I met Henrique, the team coordinator. He was just over forty — twenty years older than me — and carried a depth in his eyes that intrigued me. He was kind, calm, patient… and little by little, I fell in love with this man who seemed to have lived more than he revealed.
At first, I admired him only as a colleague, but soon my heart would race just hearing his voice. He had been through difficult times: a failed marriage, moving from city to city, losses he rarely talked about. He only said:
— “I lost something very important in the past. Now I just want to live honestly.”
Our relationship grew softly, without jealousy, fights or insecurity. He always treated me gently, as if holding something too fragile to break. And although people whispered — “how can a 20-year-old girl fall in love with a man over 40?” — I didn’t care. With him, I felt safe.
Until one day, Henrique said:
— “I want to meet your mother. I want to do everything right, without hiding anything.”
My heart tightened. My mother was strict, cautious, and always afraid of seeing me suffer. But if it was true love, there was nothing to fear.
On the scheduled day, I took Henrique to my home in Mariana. He wore a white shirt and carried a bouquet of yellow flowers — my mother’s favorites, which I had mentioned without much thought. We walked hand in hand through the old iron gate. My mother was watering the plants when she looked up.
And then… she froze.
Her eyes widened like I had never seen. Before I could say anything, my mother dropped the hose and ran toward Henrique. She hugged him tightly, as if finding someone lost for years.
— “My God… it’s you!” she cried. “Henrique!”
The world stopped.
I stood still, unable to understand. My mother sobbed in his arms, while Henrique remained stiff, pale, unable even to lift his arms to hug her back. His eyes were hollow… as if facing a ghost.
— “I can’t believe this…” my mother repeated.
— “It can’t be…” Henrique whispered.
A chill ran down my spine. Something inside me knew a truth was about to be revealed — one I could never have imagined.
— “Mom…” I managed to say. “What’s going on?”
My mother slowly stepped back, wiping her tears, and looked at Henrique as if seeing a miracle — or an old wound reopening.
— “Luara…” she said, her voice breaking. “This man… this man is your father’s younger brother.”
My heart sank.
Henrique closed his eyes as if struck.
My boyfriend was, in truth… my uncle.
A heavy silence fell over us. Soft rain began to fall in the backyard, as if the sky itself cried.
My entire world changed in that instant — and nothing would ever be the same again.
